When I was young and just starting out as a sysadmin, a frequent complaint among the team about my boss was: “He doesn’t want to innovate.” I didn’t have a strong opinion of my own back then, but I nodded along more than once.

Nowadays I find myself closer and closer to the idea of choosing what works, what has a proven track record, what is simple and easy to fix when it breaks.

Research and Production, are two different mindsets and settings.

For Prod, I usually prefer to choose boring technology.

For Research though, going fast and using “accelerators” can actually slow you down. That is why is not only about the boring, but also about crafting your own ideas.
